Rodent-Proof Your Home Before It’s Too Late!

by on October 3, 2012

Rodents are some of the most destructive and bacteria-infested creatures that can get into our homes. Not only do they spread disease by simply trotting along inside our homes or attics, but they often leave behind material that could be fatal to many of us. Rodent droppings present the threat of e-coli and as it dries and turns to dust, also puts us at risk for the hantavirus.

Rodents of all kinds also destroy the interior of our homes by chewing on electrical wiring, tubing for air conditioning and pull out the fiberglass that insulates our homes. In a nutshell – rodents are bad business.

So what can we do to keep ourselves protected from these harmful Ridgewood pests? Here are some helpful tips from Ridgewood pest control experts.

The first tip is a no-brainer: make sure rodents can’t get in. Check your home for any cracks, crevices, holes, gaps, etc. Even the smallest crack in the foundation or gap in between the door and its frame serves as a possible entry point. Mice especially do not need a lot of room to stuff their bodies into a hole in order to find a warm and safe place to nest. Pest control specialists say a hole the size of a dime is sufficient enough for a mouse to fit through. Make sure to check everywhere – gutters, attics, chimneys, roofs, etc. If you find any areas that are questionable, call your Ridgewood pest control technician.

Keep any ornamentals close to your home trimmed or eliminate them altogether. Not only will rodents climb these to gain access to your home, but they are also hosts for bugs. Getting rid of branches that reach your roof may be all around beneficial.

The most important thing you can do other than seal any holes in your home is keep your kitchen clean and sanitary. Make sure food is put away or placed in an air-tight container, especially pet food. Wipe up crumbs and do not leave food in the sink. Make sure counters and stove tops are cleaned and definitely make sure food remnants are cleaned from the floor.

Call your Ridgewood pest control company to make sure your home is protected from these dangerous Ridgewood pests!
